Effects of Nandrolone Decanoate on Spermatogenesis in Wistar Rats With and Without Physical Training International Journal of Morphology
Maia,Bernardo Porto; Silveira,Jéssica de Oliveira; Borges,Mariana Garcia Lisboa; Pereira,Danilo Ales Ponzi; Pinheiro,Julyara Lima; Freitas,Jofre Jacob da Silva; Kietzer,Katia Simone.
Androgenic anabolic steroids (AAS) are artificial testosterone analogues, used as medicine in chronic diseases, because they increase protein synthesis generating muscle hypertrophy. Its effect has caught the attention of athletes and gym users, thus their consumption has become epidemic, due to easy marketing, the immediate results and the false impression that it doesn't carry health risks. Such risks may globally harm the body. This study aims to investigate the influence on spermatogenesis of using nandrolone decanoate with or without physical training. Twenty-four rats, divided into four groups were used: sedentary group (SG), sedentary on steroids group (SSG), trained group (TG) and trained on steroids group (TSG). The animals were trained on...

Effects that nutritional and saline gradients have on the growth of Passiflora mucronata Lam. and Canavalia rosea (Sw.) DC. found in the restinga of Brazil Acta Botanica
Lourenço Junior,Jehová; Zambom,Oberdan; Rossi,Magda Santos; Cuzzuol,Geraldo Rogério Faustini.
Salinity and fertility are the main factors cited in Within the restinga (coastal woodland) biome in Brazil, the positioning of Canavalia rosea and Passiflora mucronata occur, respectively, near the shore-in the creeping psammophyte formation (CPF) - and far from the shore - in the Palmae formation (PF). The hypothesis that such positioning is related to salinity and fertility was tested by applying a salt gradient (increasing solutions of NaCl) and a nutritional gradient (different proportions of Hoagland solution). Neither species survived in solutions over 200 mM of NaCl. The shoots of P. mucronata showed negative growth (lower dry mass) in the first week of exposure to saline solutions. The roots of C. rosea showed great sensitivity to salinity, which...

Electrolyzed-reduced water increases resistance to oxidative stress, fertility, and lifespan via insulin/IGF-1-like signal in C. elegans Biol. Res.
Park,Seul-Ki; Park,Sang-Kyu.
Electrolyzed-reduced water (ERW) scavenges reactive oxygen species and is a powerful anti-oxidant. A positive correlation between oxidative stress and aging has been proved in many model organisms. In Caenorhabditis elegans, many long-lived mutants showed reduced fertility as a trade off against longevity phenotype. We aimed to study the effect of ERW on oxidative stress, fertility and lifespan of C. elegans. We also investigated the genetic pathway involved in the effect of ERW on resistance to oxidative stress and lifespan. We compared lifespan and fertility of worms in media prepared with distilled water and ERW. ERW significantly extended lifespan and increased the number of progeny produced. Then the effect of ERW on resistance to oxidative stress and...

Estrogens and male reproduction: a new concept BJMBR
Carreau,S.; Silandre,D.; Bourguiba,S.; Hamden,K.; Said,L.; Lambard,S.; Galeraud-Denis,I.; Delalande,C..
The mammalian testis serves two main functions: production of spermatozoa and synthesis of steroids; among them estrogens are the end products obtained from the irreversible transformation of androgens by a microsomal enzymatic complex named aromatase. The aromatase is encoded by a single gene (cyp19) in humans which contains 18 exons, 9 of them being translated. In rats, the aromatase activity is mainly located in Sertoli cells of immature rats and then in Leydig cells of adult rats. We have demonstrated that germ cells represent an important source of estrogens: the amount of P450arom transcript is 3-fold higher in pachytene spermatocytes compared to gonocytes or round spermatids; conversely, aromatase activity is more intense in haploid cells. Male germ...

FUKUI, Yutaka; KOHNO, Hirohide; OKABE, Kentaro; KATSUKI, Sara; YOSHIZAWA, Masahiro; TOGARI, Tetsuro; WATANABE, Hiroyuki; 福井, 豊.
In this study, two successive field trials were conducted during the non-breeding season to investigate various factors affecting on fertility of Suffolk ewes after intrauterine insemination with frozen-thawed semen. In the first year (Experiment 1), three sperm numbers per insemination dose (0.25, 0.5 and 1 million sperm) and five sheep farms were used, and in the second year (Experiment 2), parity, age, body weight, body condition score (BCS) and postpartum days were investigated to compare pregnancy and lambing rates. High pregnancy and lambing rates (70.6 and 70.6%, respectively) were obtained with 0.25 million sperm per dose. There were no significant differences in the pregnancy and lambing rates among the five farms, but there was a tendency for one...

Family Size, Economics and Child Gender Preference: A Case Study in the Nyeri District of Kenya AgEcon
Kiriti, Tabitha; Tisdell, Clement A..
Kenyan women have more children, especially in rural areas, than in most developing nations. This is widely believed to be an impediment to Kenya’s economic development. Thus, factors influencing family size in the Kenyan context are important for its future. A brief review of economic theories of fertility leads to the conclusion that both economics and social/cultural factors must be considered simultaneously when examining factors that determine the number of children in a family. The need to do this is borne out in Kenya’s situation by utilising responses from a random sample of rural households in the Nyeri district of Kenya. Economic and social/cultural factors intertwine to influence family sizes in this district. After providing a summary of the...

Family Structure, Fertility and Child Quality in Colombia AgEcon
Ribero, Rocio.
This paper analyzes how family structure and fertility alter children quality in Colombia. Reduced form models to determine marital status of women and number of children ever born are estimated considering factors that affect women's bargaining powers inside the marriage. Tentative estimates of structural interdependence between these variables and children outcomes are outlined, revealing that marriage has a positive link with child quality and fertility has a negative link with child quality. Colombian national household survey data at rural and urban levels are used for the estimations.

Fertilidade do caranguejo de mangue Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus) (Crustacea, Brachyura, Ocypodidae), em Iguape (São Paulo, Brasil) Zoologia
Hattori,Gustavo Yomar; Pinheiro,Marcelo Antonio Amaro.
A total of 58 Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) ovigerous females in final embryonic stage were collected in mangrove forest at Iguape (São Paulo). Each female were kept in laboratory until the larvae hatching and had their carapace width (CW) measured with caliper (0.05 mm) and the larval number (LN) calculated by volumetric method. The hatching rates (HR) were calculated for each animal's size class (5 mm). The values of LN and CW obtained were subjected to regression analyses and the best fitting model was chosen by comparing the obtained determination coefficients (R²). The fertility varied from 71,200 to 220,800 larvae (147,169 ± 32,070 larvae), corresponding to 41.7 to 76.8 mm CW (63.7±7.9 mm), respectively. The relationship LNxCW was expressed by the...

Fertility and Female Work Force Participation in Bangladesh: Causality and Cointegration AgEcon
Hossain, Mohammad; Tisdell, Clement A..
This paper examines the causal links between fertility and female labor force participation in Bangladesh over the period 1974-2000 by specifying a bivariate and several trivariate models in a vector error correction framework. The three trivariate models alternatively include average age at first marriage for females, per capita GDP and infant mortality rate, which control for the effects of other socio-economic factors on fertility and female labor force participation. All the specified models indicate an inverse long-run relationship between fertility and female labor force participation. While the bivariate model also indicates bidirectional causality, the multivariate models confirm only a unidirectional causality – from labor force participation...

Fertility, Child Work and Schooling Consequences of Family Planning Programs: Evidence from an Experiment in Rural Bangladesh AgEcon
Sinha, Nistha.
Despite the attractiveness of experiments from the perspective of program evaluation, there have been very few program experiments in the area of family planning. This paper evaluates an ongoing family planning program experiment in rural Bangladesh. The paper estimates the effect of mothers'’ program exposure on fertility and children’'s time allocation. The results show that while the program was effective in reducing fertility, it had no significant impact on children’'s school enrollment. However, the program appears to have significantly raised boys'’ participation in the labor force.

Fertility Enhancing Potency of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Male Rats BABT
Nnamonu,Emmanuel Ikechukwu; Mgbenka,Bernard Obialor; Mbegbu,Edmund Chidiebere.
Abstract Cases of some grave side effects of some allopathic medicines used in treatment of infertility has caused a global need for alternatives with minimal or no side effect, hence the demand to evaluate the fertility enhancing potential of omega-3 fatty acids (O3FA) in male rats. This study evaluated the fertility enhancing potential of omega-3 fatty acids (O3FA) in male rats. Seventy-two sexually mature male albino rats 11-13 weeks of age, weighing between 171 - 180 g were assigned into six groups (I - VI) fed graded doses of O3FA. Administration of O3FA lasted twenty-eight days at 48 hour intervals. At the end of the treatment, organosomatic index of testes, testicular and epididymis sperm cells counts and testicular histology were assessed following...

Fertility in South Dublin a Century Ago: A First Look AgEcon
Guinnane, Timothy W.; Moehling, Carolyn M.; Grada, Cormac O.
Ireland's relatively late and feeble fertility transition remains poorly-understood. The leading explanations stress the role of Catholicism and a conservative social ethos. This paper reports the first results from a project that uses new samples from the 1911 census of Ireland to study fertility in Dublin and Belfast. Our larger project aims to use the extensive literature on the fertility transition elsewhere in Europe to refine and test leading hypotheses in their Irish context. The present paper uses a sample from the Dublin suburb of Pembroke to take a first look at the questions, data, and methods. This sample is much larger than those used in previous studies of Irish fertility, and is the first from an urban area. We find considerable support for...
